A Handy Tip for Entrepreneurial Insomnia
By Leo Lucianis

I hope you are passionate about what you do. If you aren't it's time to rethink what you're doing! But sometimes, we as entrepreneurs get so excited about the possibilities that exist all around us that it's hard to fall asleep. Sound familiar?

Many a night I will try my best to fall asleep at a decent hour, but eventually, I'll give up, and get back on the computer. It would seem like the logical thing to do (if you can't sleep, might as well work, right?), but it can really affect your health.

Throw into the mix that I'm a biological night owl, and sometimes it's only when the light of dawn breaks through the window do I realize I better get some sleep.

And talk about suffering the consequences in the morning. The rest of the day becomes a hazy fog, and many times a nap is required if I am to function even semi-coherently.

A few days ago I was talking to one of my friends, a wealthy entrepreneur and film producer, who seems to constantly pop out great ideas, and is still one of the most energetic people I know. And he told me that he had the same problem I have, up until a few years ago.

He told me whenever he gets the uncontrollable entrepreneurial fever, and he knows he needs a good night's sleep (which is every night) he simply places a notebook and a pen next to his bed. Then he tries to go to sleep.

Invariably, all of those thoughts and ideas will start spilling into his brain, and he'll get excited and restless. When this happens, he simply reaches over, turns on the light, and scribbles down his idea. That's all. So why, you may be asking, is this helpful?

According to my friend, who is an expert in human psychology, there are two reasons why this is helpful. First of all, for most people, bed time is probably the first time in a busy entrepreneur's day that they get to actually be alone with their thoughts.

Think about it. For the first time all day you aren't on the phone, writing copy, or putting out fires. So your subconscious mind can finally relax, take a breath, and... push all of your subconscious thoughts to the forefront. Since these are usually your best ideas, you get excited and cannot sleep.

Second, these ideas are "open loops" (to use Neuro Linguistic Programming terms) because the ideas are not immediately actionable. Literally, you are lying in bed thinking about all the things you COULD be doing. It's no wonder you can't sleep!

So when you use the notebook to write your incomplete ideas down you are actually closing that open loop in a concrete fashion. You are telling your subconscious mind, "Hey, we got it on paper. Don't worry. We can take care of it in the morning. You can rest, okay?"

Practice this until your mind comes to peace, knowing that all those great ideas won't be forgotten sometime in the night. Plus, when you can get a good night's rest, you will be able to IMPLEMENT all those ideas from your notebook with the passion and energy they deserve!
