Tips For Improving Your Online Search Results
By Joe Reinbold

It is amazing sometimes how many links I pull up on a search site like Google when I just enter a term that I am looking for. For instance if I enter the term home income, I will get 27,300,000 results. Yes, that is over 27 million results. ( I noticed that my site, The Entrepreneur's Home Business Link comes up as number seven out of the 27 million sites :>). But if you enter the same terms but with quotes, i.e., "home income" it cuts the results down to 775,000. That is quite a difference.

So you can improve your results for the subject that you are looking for by just including quotes around the term.

This can be especially helpful when you are looking for a particular name. If I enter Joe Reinbold I will get 90,500 results because it includes all the Joe's and a lot of other Reinbold's with other first names. However if I again, put it in quotes it cuts the results down to 7,420, including results only with the Joe's.

Another note, the search results are not any different when you use joe reinbold or Joe Reinbold since the searches are not case sensitive.

Many times when I am writing I come upon a word which I need to define. On Google all you need to do is put the term define followed by a colon and the word and you will get a definition. For instance try define:online marketing and one of the results you will get is:

Online advertising is done exclusively on the web or through e-mail. Various types of online marketing include: affliliate programs, search engine optimization, banner advertising, directory enhancement, posts to moderated discussion lists, newsgroups, and forums, email advertising, online press ...

You can also refine your searches by using a minus sign. suppose you are looking for free classified sites. If you enter just classified advertising you will get over 3,000,000 sites. But if you enter classified advertising -paid it will exclude paid sites. When you use it this way make sure that you include a space before the minus sign.

Some additional tips....

How about when you are going on vacation and you need to know what the weather is. For example I am flying from New Jersey to Tampa, Florida. If I go to Google and enter "tampa florida weather" the first listing I get will be the current temperature and a three day forecast.

Need to know where an area code is when you see a telephone number on your caller ID. Just enter the area code in the search box and it will bring up the city or cities for that code.

There is a lot of information on the web and it always helps to be able to refine your search a bit.
