Inspection/TIGTA Retiree Association

Personalized Retirement Handbook From OPM

From: Dave Hariton....

I received a forwarded e-mail from the Association of Former Federal Narcotic Agents. As a Federal Government retiree or survivor, I thought you might be interested.

OPM now prepares a 28 page personalized retirement handbook for each retiree; just for the asking. It is great, simple to understand and details all of your personal benefits. They detail your pensions, monthly benefits, survivor benefits, health and life insurance benefits and options, contributions and tax information, cost of living adjustments and more.

It is a must have booklet for every annuitant and their family. It has all the contact information in case of death. They prepared mine as of October 1, 2009 and all information in it is as of that date. It takes a month to get it but you just need to call and ask for it (free, of course). They didn't offer this a few years back when I retired and, in particular, it explains your Life Insurance Options for when you turn 65.

You'll need to give them your CSA Number which is on the statements that we receive from OPM and some other personal information. The OPM phone number is 1-888-767-6738 and for Retirees in the Washington, D.C. area they can call: 202-606-0500. Some retirees may have been aware of this but, like me, I bet there are quite a few people who are not aware of this important document.

I just tried it and it works. When you call be prepared to wait for about five minutes listening to pre-recorded messages. Then they will give you a menu of choices. You want choice #3. Then about another three minute wait (this one will probably depend on how busy they are at the time of your call) and then about one or two minutes to do the actual ordering. I asked for the "Personalized Retirement Handbook" and he knew immediately what I wanted. He asked for my CSA #, and to verify my birth date; mailing address, and last four digits of my SSN. That was it. He said it would take about two to three weeks before I received it.

Thanks
Dave
